The Library

The main tasks of the Augustinian order were the care of liturgy, the prayer and the parish activities. Thanks to the monastery schools and to their deep interest in science and art, Augustinian monks had a very important role in the development of the cultural life everywhere they were active.
Between the XIV and XVI centuries the monastery became the seat of an important school of illuminators and enriched of many important decorations. The library had been projected in the XVIII century by Giuseppe Sartori. Besides the wide collections -more than 76 thousand books among manuscripts and illuminated books-, the library is distinguished also thanks to the richness of the rooms decorated with refined stuccoes. Inside the abbey there is also an art gallery where the oldest paintings on wood in Tyrol are kept: the group of the Crucifixion and the votive table of the XV century.
