Luson: authentic South Tyrol between Dolomites, nature and tradition

The charming village of Luson lies in the valley of the same name, not far from Bressanone in South Tyrol. Framed by the Dolomites and Mount Plose, the valley is defined by authenticity, wide open spaces and a deep sense of tranquillity. Its landscape alternates rolling meadows, the intense green of the high plateau with its pastures and forests, and impressive peaks such as the solitary Sass de Putia, rising at the end of the valley within the Puez‑Odle Nature Park.

The vast Luson Alpine Plateau and the majestic scenery around Sass de Putia make this area a still little‑known destination, especially appreciated by nature lovers. Whether you prefer relaxing walks or long high‑altitude hikes, this is a place where the mountains can be experienced in their most peaceful and genuine form. Here, nature, tradition and heartfelt hospitality are part of everyday life. The rhythm of the valley is shaped by farming culture and a strong bond with the land. Luson is also an ideal destination for family holidays, offering an unspoilt environment full of discoveries.

The hamlets of Luson

Luson Paese is the lively centre of the municipality. Located on the sunny valley floor, it combines rural tradition with the vibrancy of village life. Around the church and the town hall, locals and visitors meet in small shops, inns and during cultural events. Numerous trails start from here, such as the Farm Trail or the Way of the Cross leading to Petschied.

Exploring the valley or climbing its slopes, you reach small hamlets like Flitt, Rungg and Petschied, where centuries‑old mountain farms cling to the sunny hillsides, bearing witness to a long‑standing cultural landscape. From Flitt, a direct trail leads to the alpine pastures and Cima Lasta. Down in the valley at Petschied, silence reigns: the road ends and wild nature begins. These places are true energy spots, where the deep connection between people and nature can be felt intensely. Petschied also offers a sports field and a natural toboggan run, a favourite among families in winter. Thanks to its location, it is the ideal starting point for hikes to Sass de Putia and Passo delle Erbe.

Glittner See – the mirror of the Dolomites

At 2,151 metres, on the eastern side of the Luson Alpine Plateau, lies Glittner See, a quiet jewel of the alpine world. On windless days, the reflection of Sass de Putia appears perfectly on the still surface of the lake, creating a picture‑perfect scene.

The circular hike to the lake starts from Oberflitt. Following trail no. 10, you reach the Tunaretsch mountain hut or, alternatively, the Giogo di Glitt (2,189 m) before descending to the lake. The return route passes by the Jakobsstöckl. It is an easy but fairly long tour of about 13 km, taking around 4 hours and 30 minutes with 620 metres of elevation gain.

Luson in summer

Luson is a paradise for hikers, offering every kind of trail: easy walks around the village, scenic paths across the green pastures and farms of the Luson Alpine Plateau, cultural routes and high‑altitude hikes. A great panoramic option without technical difficulties—but requiring good fitness—is Monte Campill. More experienced hikers can tackle the via ferrata on Sass de Putia.

Many trails lead to farms and mountain huts, also suitable for children, where you can enjoy excellent local cuisine. The Croce Hut is particularly appreciated for its panoramic terrace overlooking the Dolomites. Mountain bikers will also find plenty of rewarding routes.

Right in the heart of the village lies the natural swimming lake of Luson, a true gem. Without the use of chemicals, the water regenerates naturally thanks to plants and biological filters. On warm summer days, it is the perfect place for a refreshing dip after a hike. With its manicured lawns and mountain views, the lake invites you to relax, watch the clouds drift by and enjoy water in its purest form.

Luson in winter

When winter arrives, Luson transforms into a soft, silent paradise. The gentle peaks of the Luson Alpine Plateau seem made for snowshoeing and ski touring. Here, noise and crowds are nowhere to be found. Cross‑country skiers can enjoy the high‑altitude loops of the plateau, while families appreciate the small Rungg ski lift, perfect for a stress‑free introduction to winter sports. There is also an ice‑skating rink and a toboggan run.

Slow Food Travel Villnöss valley - cover
Slow Food Travel Villnöss valley

In the unspoilt Val di Funes, its rural culture and sustainability can be perceived through the lifestyle of the local population. The wide range of activities at a slow pace and the local culinary delights are a highlight for those seeking a holiday in nature. It was therefore natural for Slow Food to work together with the many artisan producers, skilled restaurateurs and impeccable hoteliers to create South Tyrol's first Slow Food Travel destination, and to highlight the characteristics of a gastronomy that is unique in terms of quality and sustainability.

The Villnöss valley is home to two Presidi Slow Food, which are projects to protect local and artisan foods and support their producers. These include the sheep "Villnösser Brillenschaf" and the Alpine Grey Cattle.
