Lake Idro, historically known as Eridio, is a fascinating glacial lake stretching between Lombardy and Trentino, in a landscape where the deep blue of the water meets the green of forests and alpine meadows. Covering around eleven square kilometres and featuring an elongated shape that follows the valley’s natural line, it is one of the most evocative bodies of water in the Alpine arc, while still maintaining a more intimate scale compared to the region’s larger lakes.
Most of the lake lies within the province of Brescia, but its north‑eastern shore belongs to Trentino, in the municipality of Bondone, overlooking the Val del Chiese. Along its shores stand four villages rich in history and tradition: Baitoni, the only Trentino settlement, and the Brescian villages of Ponte Caffaro, Anfo and Idro, all of which still preserve an authentic and welcoming atmosphere. Dominating the landscape is the Rocca d’Anfo, an extraordinary Napoleonic fortress climbing the eastern slope of the lake, today open to guided tours that reveal breathtaking views and a fascinating journey through Italian military history.
