Lake of Idro

Lake Idro, historically known as Eridio, is a fascinating glacial lake stretching between Lombardy and Trentino, in a landscape where the deep blue of the water meets the green of forests and alpine meadows. Covering around eleven square kilometres and featuring an elongated shape that follows the valley’s natural line, it is one of the most evocative bodies of water in the Alpine arc, while still maintaining a more intimate scale compared to the region’s larger lakes.

Most of the lake lies within the province of Brescia, but its north‑eastern shore belongs to Trentino, in the municipality of Bondone, overlooking the Val del Chiese. Along its shores stand four villages rich in history and tradition: Baitoni, the only Trentino settlement, and the Brescian villages of Ponte Caffaro, Anfo and Idro, all of which still preserve an authentic and welcoming atmosphere. In recent years, the area has seen a significant rise in tourism quality, with new hotels, campsites, glamping sites and guest accommodations that have made the lake even more appealing for travellers seeking a holiday immersed in nature.

Lake Idro is an ideal destination for anyone who loves experiencing water in all its forms. Its clear, swimmable waters from June to September attract families and visitors looking for relaxation, while the steady afternoon wind makes it perfect for windsurfing, sailing, kite surfing, canoeing and SUP. Natural beaches, green areas and small piers allow visitors to enjoy the lake in a simple and spontaneous way, far from the crowds of more famous Alpine lakes.

The surrounding area is rich in both nature and culture. The mountains rising around the basin offer panoramic trails, trekking routes and mountain‑bike itineraries, while along the shoreline lie protected wetlands that host a diverse and abundant fauna. Dominating the landscape is the Rocca d’Anfo, an extraordinary Napoleonic fortress climbing the eastern slope of the lake, today open to guided tours that reveal breathtaking views and a fascinating journey through Italian military history.
