The Scalette Trail, also known as the Parsec Trail, is one of the most fascinating routes in the Catinaccio Group. It combines dramatic vertical scenery, wild alpine landscapes and a short equipped section, making it ideal for hikers with some experience and a taste for adventure.
Start: Rifugio Gardeccia (1,950 m)
From Rifugio Gardeccia, easily reached from Pera or Vigo di Fassa, the trail immediately enters the heart of the Vallon del Larsec, a rugged and spectacular environment dominated by Dolomite towers and steep rock faces.
The route follows CAI Trail 583, initially on comfortable and well‑marked terrain, with moderate gradients that allow you to find your pace and enjoy the landscape.
Towards the Parsec Ridge
As you progress, the trail becomes rockier and the surroundings increasingly wild. The walls of the Larsec close in around the path, creating a unique atmosphere typical of this part of the Catinaccio.
The terrain becomes steeper and more gravelly, but always well defined.
The Equipped Section of the Scalette
At the base of the rocky band begins the most technical part of the route: a short section equipped with steel cables and a few metal steps that help overcome a rocky step.
The equipped stretch is short (about 100–150 m)
No via ferrata gear is required
Suitable for hikers accustomed to exposed terrain
Once past this section, the trail resumes climbing on easier ground.
Passo delle Scalette (2,348 m)
The pass opens suddenly, offering a wide view over the Vallon de Lausa and the surrounding peaks. It’s an ideal spot for a scenic break before continuing towards Antermoia.
From the Pass to Rifugio Antermoia (2,497 m)
From Passo delle Scalette, the trail descends gently into the lunar silence of the Vallon de Lausa, then climbs again towards Passo di Lausa. A panoramic traverse leads to the final stretch that reaches Rifugio Antermoia, one of the most iconic huts in the Dolomites.
The hut overlooks the famous Lake Antermoia, a glacial basin set among vertical rock walls—one of the most photographed places in Val di Fassa.
Return
The return can be made:
- Via the same route (the simplest and most direct option) Follow CAI 583 back to Rifugio Gardeccia, descending again through the short equipped section.
- Alternatively, via Passo Principe and the Vajolet (longer loop) For experienced hikers, it is possible to create a loop by crossing Passo Principe, descending to Rifugio Vajolet, and returning to Gardeccia.
