Every three years, in mid-June, the communities of twelve parishes in Val Badia renew an ancient tradition: a pilgrimage crossing the Dolomite passes to Val di Funes, before continuing the next day to the Monastery of Sabiona. Along the way, through forests and mountains, songs and prayers rise and echo in the silence of nature.
The journey begins in Pescol, where the men of Val Badia gather to ascend the Medalghes Pass and descend to Santa Maddalena in Val di Funes. Here they are joined by pilgrims from Antermoia, who have crossed the Passo delle Erbe. Together, the group proceeds to San Pietro in Val di Funes, warmly welcomed by the local community and accompanied by the melodies of the town band. After an overnight stay, the march resumes at dawn towards Sabiona, where the pilgrims gather in prayer at the monastery before returning to San Pietro to conclude the pilgrimage.
This tradition, known as “Jeúnn,” has ancient roots: according to legend, it began as a ritual to invoke divine protection for crops against pests and diseases. Today, it brings together around a thousand men of all ages, who share two intense days of faith, fellowship, and deep connection with their land.
