Forni di Sopra: sport holidays on the Friuli Dolomites

Forni di Sopra is a village of the Carnia region at the beginning of the nature reserve of the Parco Naturale delle Dolomiti Friulane. It is the ideal place to practice grass skiing, hiking, climbing or to go for simple walks in the forests. Forni offers many attractions also for its smaller guests, and in winter the beautiful ski resort of Varmost.

Forni di Sopra is famous for grass skiing: it is in fact a FISI center, the Italian Winter Sports Association, and every year hosts important competitions like the Grass Skiing World Cup. Forni di Sopra offers also a wide range of hiking trails, trekking trails and climbing routes running from the valley floors to the peaks of the Friuli Dolomites: Truoi dai Sclops, Via delle Malghe and Truoi dal Von are only some of the itineraries you can choose from. There is no lack of vie ferrate and climbing routes on natural and artificial walls. In summer Forni di Sopra hosts the Sky Race delle Dolomiti Friulane, a sky running competition on forest paths. Moreover, the Parco delle Dolomiti Friulane is a large nature reserve with some of the most sought for spontaneous flowers and herbs, so much that in the past the Venice Republic used them for cooking and for the production of medicines. Every year in June the Festa delle erbe di primavera is dedicated to these valuable plant species.

Mountain biking lovers have at their disposal a 20 km long trail winding among fascinating natural sites, and for the most daring mountain bikers there is the downhill trail of Varmost. Varmost can be easily reached with the lift facilities, and there you can practice paragliding or try the delicious products of the malghe, the typical Alpine summer houses. You can also practice canyoning in the streams Tolina and Rassie in Forni di Sotto. There are two adventure parks, the Dolomiti Adventure Park and the Adventure Climb Varmost, equipped with ropes and bridges.

In winter the Varmost ski resort offers perfectly groomed slopes of every level. The slopes cover two different areas and from there you can enjoy a breathtaking view on the mountains Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Antelao, Pelmo, Civetta and Friuli Dolomites. Besides Alpine skiing, you can practice cross-country skiing on a partly floodlit trail, ice skating, dog sledding, ski mountaineering and snowshoeing. In February the Ski Krono Varmost, a ski mountaineering competition, takes place. In the leisure center you will find a gym, a sauna area, a swimming pool and a climbing wall.

Forni di Sopra offers also the perfect holiday for kids, who find here the Fantasy Park (Fantasy Snow Park in winter), with toys and leisure activities organized the whole year round.
