Merano: the ancient charm of the Waalweg paths

12 April 2021

With the arrival of spring, the Waalweg paths, the old irrigation channels, are back in operation in Merano. The Waalweg paths are easy hikes for everyone, young and old, whose history dates back to the 13th century. The Waalweg paths run between Marlengo, Lagundo and Scena. There are a total of 16 Waalweg trails, of which we would like to present five of the best known and most beautiful.

Marlinger Waalweg

The Marlengo Waalweg path is the longest in South Tyrol at 12 km in length. Built over 250 years ago, the trail starts at the Tel bridge and, after a short ascent, continues on level and stable ground. After passing Lebenberg Castle, it leads along the Marlinger Berg on a gentle descent to the village of Lana.

Lagundo Waalweg path

The 6-km-long trail leads from Tel, a small village in the municipality of Parcines, via Plars and Lagundo to Quarazze (Merano). The Lagundo Waalweg path can also be hiked in the opposite direction, i.e. from Tirol or Merano to Lagundo, Plars and finally Tel. The Lagundo Waalweg begins just above Quarazze (coming from Merano) or below S. Pietro and Thurnstein Castle (coming from Tirol).

Schenna Waalweg path

The 6.5 km long Schenna Waalweg path starts in Verdines, which is located just above the entrance to the Passeier Valley and can be easily reached via the village of Schenna. Through fruit orchards and dense forests, you arrive in the Val di Nova. At the valley station of the Monte Ivigna cable car you can take path no. 15, which leads directly back to Scena. Alternatively, you can also take the bus that will take you back to the starting point.

Parcines Waalweg path

The Parcines Waalweg begins about half an hour's walk from the centre of Parcines. Once you have reached the village of Vallettina (Vertigen), continue on the slightly uphill path until you reach the point where the Parcines Waalweg path starts. The trail leads to the Val di Tel (Zieltal), where you can also admire the large Parcines waterfall. Near the waterfall, take the downhill path (no. 1) back to Parcines.

Maia Waalweg path

85 km starting from Merano, ideal especially for joggers. You can walk the entire Maia Waalweg path to Saltusio in the Passeier Valley and from there take the bus back to Merano.
