At the end of November and throughout December, the spectacular Krampus parades take place across South Tyrol. These frightening goat-men, covered in terrifying masks and clanging bells, roam the village streets in search of naughty children. This ancient traditional festival dates back to time immemorial and is closely linked to the Feast of Saint Nicholas. Among the participants in this unique event are people from South Tyrol as well as from northern European countries such as Germany and Austria.
Legend has it that during times of famine, young villagers would dress in animal furs and horns to terrorize and rob people in neighboring villages. However, among them was an impostor: the Devil himself. The villagers then called upon Bishop Nicholas to exorcise the evil presence.
