In November and December, spectacular Krampus parades take place throughout South Tyrol. Frightening goat-like men, covered in scary masks and noisy cowbells, roam the streets of the villages in search of naughty children. A traditional celebration that dates back to ancient times and is linked to the feast of Saint Nicholas. Among the participants in this unique event are people from South Tyrol and from northern European countries such as Germany and Austria.
Legend has it that in times of famine, the young men of the village dressed in furs and animal horns to terrify and rob the inhabitants of neighboring villages. Among them, however, was an impostor: the devil himself. Bishop Nicholas was therefore called upon to exorcise this presence.
