A two‑day adventure into the realm of high altitude: sweeping views, airy ridges, and the unique atmosphere of the Mantova al Vioz Hut, the highest refuge in the Central and Eastern Alps. A perfect experience for expert hikers who want to explore the glacial landscapes of the Cevedale Group.
Day 1 – From Peio Fonti to the Mantova al Vioz Hut
The journey begins in Peio Fonti, where the cable car quickly takes you to the Rifugio Scoiattolo. A second lift brings you to the Doss dei Gembri Hut (2300 m), the starting point of the scenic trail no. 105.
The path climbs along the ridge towards Monte Vioz, offering breathtaking views over Val di Sole and the peaks of Stelvio National Park. After crossing the rugged area of the Dente del Vioz, the trail reaches the Mantova al Vioz Hut (3535 m), an unforgettable place to spend the night surrounded by the silence of the high mountains.
Day 2 – Summit of Monte Vioz and descent to Peio
In the morning, a short walk across the snowfield leads to the summit of Monte Vioz (3645 m). The panorama is extraordinary: the Forni Glacier stretches below, framed by the famous “13 peaks” of the Ortles‑Cevedale group. On clear days, the view extends all the way to the Adamello and Presanella ranges.
The descent follows the same route: back to the Mantova Hut, down to Doss dei Gembri, and along trail 105 to Peio Paese, where the hike ends.
