Path of peace

The Peace Trail is one of the most meaningful long‑distance routes in the Alps: a 520‑km itinerary linking Passo dello Stelvio with the Marmolada, following the former Italian–Austrian frontline of the First World War. It is a path where nature, memory and culture intertwine, crossing mountains, valleys and fortifications that still bear witness to the conflict. The entire route is marked with the symbol of a white dove, painted on wood or rock.

Along the trail, hikers encounter some of the most significant sites of the Great War:

  • former military roads transformed into panoramic paths
  • trenches, walkways and restored fortifications
  • lookout points and historic border markers

Between 1986 and 1990, the Autonomous Province of Trento launched a major restoration project, reopening military structures, securing exposed sections and installing dedicated signage. Additional maintenance and recovery work was carried out during the Centenary of the First World War.
