The Val di Fanes, one of the most fascinating valleys in the Ampezzo Dolomites, is a place where nature, silence, and ancient legends intertwine. This simple yet evocative itinerary starts in Fiames, just a few minutes from Cortina d’Ampezzo, and leads to the charming Laghetto di Fanes, located just before the border with the Province of Bolzano.
From the parking area in Fiames, follow the main road for about one kilometre, gradually leaving the traffic behind and approaching the wild heart of the valley. The landscape changes quickly: the forest becomes denser, the air cooler, and the sound of the Rio Fanes accompanies your steps.
Once you reach the bridge at Pian de Loa, the road becomes steeper and the trail begins to climb, immersing you in an increasingly natural and untouched environment.
Following the trail markers, you arrive at the famous Ponte Outo, suspended above the canyon carved by the stream. Here the view opens onto one of the most iconic points of the valley.
At the junction, you can turn right to visit the spectacular Cascate di Fanes, a powerful and scenic waterfall that is well worth a short detour. Those who wish can also follow the optional equipped section for an even closer and more thrilling viewpoint.
Returning to the main trail, continue along the left side of the valley. The scenery changes again: the canyon gives way to open meadows, solitary larches, and wide clearings where marmots are often spotted and the wind whispers through the rocks.
The walk is pleasant and never too demanding. After about 1 hour and 45 minutes from Fiames, you reach the peaceful Laghetto di Fanes, an alpine lake reflecting the surrounding peaks and offering a serene, timeless atmosphere.
Continuing a few minutes beyond the lake, you officially enter the Province of Bolzano, where the valley opens towards the Fanes plateau and the Capanna Alpina area.
For the return, simply follow the same trail back to Fiames.
