Cross‑Country Skiing in San Martino–Passo Rolle

The San Martino di Castrozza – Passo Rolle ski area enjoys a truly privileged position, with consistently abundant snowfall, mild winter temperatures and countless days of sunshine. Alongside its renowned alpine offer, the region features an extensive network of trails dedicated to cross‑country skiing, with around thirty kilometres of routes winding through forests, clearings and the spectacular scenery of the Pale di San Martino and the Paneveggio – Pale di San Martino Nature Park.

The San Martino di Castrozza cross‑country trail, located on the edge of the village, is a scenic nine‑kilometre route characterised by gentle climbs and descents. It requires a good command of skis, but every effort is rewarded with breathtaking views of the Pale and the wild charm of the surrounding woods. The San Martino Cross‑Country Center offers three loops: an easy trail for beginners, an intermediate route with privileged views of the Pale di San Martino, and a more demanding track that enters the dense spruce forest of Colfosco. Snowmaking ensures excellent conditions on the easier and intermediate loops throughout the season, at altitudes ranging from 1450 to 1700 metres.

A short distance away, the Passo Rolle cross‑country center offers a medium‑difficulty trail of about two kilometres starting from Malga Rolle. Immersed in the Paneveggio – Pale di San Martino Nature Park, it provides an intense and panoramic experience at an altitude of 1980 metres, surrounded by some of the most iconic landscapes of the Dolomites.

The area also includes the Passo Cereda Cross‑Country Center, a reference point for advanced skiers. Here, cross‑country skiing is practised at a high level along ten kilometres of challenging and perfectly groomed trails. The center is equipped with changing rooms, showers and a waxing room, and regularly hosts national and international competitions. The altitude, between 1300 and 1400 metres, guarantees excellent snow conditions.

Another unmissable route is the Lago di Calaita trail in the Vanoi Valley. This easy eight‑kilometre itinerary crosses the snowy basin of the lake and offers an incomparable view of the Pale di San Martino rising above the landscape. The gentle gradients make it suitable even for beginners, and access is free of charge, at an altitude between 1600 and 1700 metres.

Completing the offer is the Imèr Cross‑Country Center, located in Peze, one kilometre from the village. The trail includes a simple 1.5‑kilometre loop with minimal elevation gain and a longer 2.4‑kilometre route. Thanks to night lighting, the track is also accessible after sunset, and equipment can be rented in the village. The Vederna and Noana trails offer gentle gradients, ideal for those approaching the sport in a peaceful and well‑maintained environment.

Finally, the Val Canali cross‑country trail, 7.5 kilometres long and of easy difficulty, starts at Bar Laghetto and winds near Villa Welsperg, headquarters of the Paneveggio – Pale di San Martino Nature Park. Ski lessons with qualified instructors are also available.

In the entire San Martino – Passo Rolle area, cross‑country skiing becomes a way to experience the mountains at a slower pace, enjoy the silence of the forests and immerse yourself in the timeless beauty of the Dolomites.
