On Sunday, September 20, Longarone hosts a day of remembrance with “The Paths of Memory”, a non-competitive walking and running event across the sites of the Vajont disaster. The event is open to everyone, both athletes and non-athletes, as an opportunity to reflect and remember.
The initiative features three routes of varying length and difficulty, following ancient paths connecting Longarone, Castellavazzo, Erto, and Casso. It is a moving journey through history and nature, along symbolic places such as the Trui dal Sciarbon, the Troi de Sant’Antoni, the pipe bridge, the Vajont dam crest, the Monte Toc landslide, and the evocative historic villages of Erto and Casso.
The Paths of Memory Routes
First Route – 9 km
Difficulty: EASY – Elevation gain: 185 m – Free start from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
The route begins on the eastern side of Ponte Campelli, in the Vajont area. It then descends towards the Piave River and, after crossing it, reaches Dogna. The path continues through the Vajont Gorge to the ENEL facilities and tunnels opposite the dam. Here, participants cross the gorge via the famous "pipe bridge" before returning to the Piave Valley. The route then descends again, passing through the abandoned marl quarry in Pascoli, continues to Codissago, and finishes at the Longarone sports facilities.
Second Route – 16 km
Difficulty: MODERATE – Elevation gain: 530 m – Free start from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
The beginning is almost identical to the 9 km route, but after leaving the pipe bridge, the trail climbs back up to the level of the open galleries of the provincial road. Participants leave the Belluno area and enter Friuli. From these galleries, it is possible to admire the arch of the dam spanning the gorge and, further ahead, the impressive Monte Toc landslide, which caused the Vajont disaster.
The route then crosses the crest of the dam via a steel walkway suspended at a height of 260 metres, before returning along the right side of the valley and crossing the Monte Toc landslide area. It reaches the village of Casso and descends along the "Troi de Sant'Antoni", an ancient footpath linking Belluno and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The route continues to Codissago and ends at the Longarone sports facilities.
Third Route – 24 km
Difficulty: CHALLENGING – Elevation gain: 610 m – Free start from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
This route largely follows the 16 km itinerary. After crossing the dam crest, participants reach the top of the landslide and continue along the trail that traverses it entirely, reaching the locality of Le Spesse. From there, the route enters the historic centre of Erto, then climbs to the "Trui dal Sciarbon", an ancient path connecting the historic villages of Erto and Casso. Once in Casso, the itinerary rejoins the 16 km route.
