A high‑altitude route that crosses some of the most iconic places in the Catinaccio range, moving through spectacular passes, historic mountain huts, and legendary viewpoints over the Vajolet Towers.
Itinerary
From the Antermoia Hut, trail no. 584 climbs to the Antermoia Pass (2,770 m), a saddle that opens onto the western side of the Catinaccio d’Antermoia. The route then continues in traverse towards Passo Principe and the Principe Hut (2,600 m), dramatically set among vertical walls and flows of dolomitic rock.
Following trail no. 584 southwards, the path first descends steeply and then eases as it enters the Val del Vajolet, reaching the Vajolet Hut and Preuss Hut (2,246 m). This is one of the most celebrated places in Dolomite mountaineering, dominated by the Vajolet Towers and the eastern face of the Catinaccio, the stage of legendary ascents by pioneers such as Paul Preuss and Tita Piaz.
From here, trail no. 542 leads in about one hour to the Re Alberto I Hut, perched on the southern side of the Towers. After the visit, return to the Vajolet and Preuss huts and take trail no. 546, which descends comfortably to the Gardeccia Hut, closing the loop.
