The Nuvolau Loop is one of the most scenic routes in the Dolomites of Ampezzo: a panoramic circuit starting from the famous Passo Giau and offering spectacular views of the Cinque Torri, the Tofana di Rozes, the Civetta, and the Marmolada. It’s the ideal itinerary for hikers looking for a complete experience, rich in points of interest and easily customizable thanks to its optional variants.
From Passo Giau to the Cinque Torri – Trail 443
From the parking area at Passo Giau (2,236 m), follow trail 443, a gentle and panoramic path that crosses high‑altitude meadows and leads toward the Cinque Torri group. Along the way, you’ll pass the junction for the Ra Gusela via ferrata: continue to the right, staying on the main trail until you reach Rifugio Scoiattoli (2,225 m), a natural balcony overlooking the iconic rock towers.
From Rifugio Scoiattoli to Rifugio Averau – Trail 439
After a scenic break, continue along the dirt road marked 439. The trail climbs toward Forcella Nuvolau, where Rifugio Averau (2,413 m) stands—a privileged viewpoint over some of the most famous Dolomite peaks. From here, the panorama stretches from the Tofana di Rozes to the Civetta, all the way to the majestic Marmolada.
Return to Passo Giau – Trail 452
From Rifugio Averau, descend along a short ski slope until you reconnect with trail 452, which leads comfortably back to Rifugio Passo Giau and the starting point.
