The Hüttensteig trail is one of the most scenic hikes in the Sesto area, ideal for those who love wide-open views, welcoming mountain huts, and a well-marked route along the slopes of Monte Elmo. Thanks to the cable car, the hike is accessible to everyone and offers spectacular views of the Sesto Dolomites from the very first steps.
Route: from the mountain station to the summit of Monte Elmo
To reach the starting point, take the Monte Elmo cable car from either Sesto or Versciaco, a hamlet of San Candido. Once at the top, near the Monte Elmo Restaurant, the hike begins along trail no. 20.
The path climbs steadily but never too steeply until it reaches the summit of Monte Elmo (2434 m), where a 360° panorama opens over the Sesto Dolomites, the Puster Valley, and the Carnic Alps.
Loop return via Rifugio Gallo Cedrone
After reaching the summit, follow the same path back for a short stretch until the junction with trail no. 4, which leads to the charming Rifugio Gallo Cedrone (2152 m). It’s an ideal spot for a panoramic break before continuing along the same trail, which completes the loop and returns to the mountain station.
