Earth, water, air, and fire — the four elements guide hikers and nature lovers along the seven themed trails of Gais, in the heart of the Puster Valley. The Lanebach circuit is one of the most scenic and demanding, offering an immersive experience where each element reveals itself through the landscape, history, and local culture.
The route begins near the Bauhof hotel in Villa Ottone and immediately climbs steeply to the northwest. Through a series of wide and narrow switchbacks, hikers ascend about 600 meters in elevation to reach the Plankstoan-Hof farm (1,484 m), a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the valley. From there, the trail crosses the Schlösslbach stream — a symbol of the water element — and continues south and southeast, following the path once used by Lanebach children to reach school in the 1980s. From the Egger farms, the descent resumes through steep and winding terrain, returning to the starting point.
Along the way, informative panels explain the meaning of the four elements in human life, nature, and cultural landscapes, offering historical insights and contemporary reflections. The trail is demanding and requires good physical condition, endurance, and surefootedness. It is approximately 6.1 km long, with a 588-meter elevation gain and an average duration of 2 hours and 15 minutes. The highest point reaches 1,577 meters.
To reach the starting point by public transport, take bus line 450 from the Mobility Center in Brunico to Gais, village stop. From there, walk to Villa Ottone. This hike is ideal for those seeking a deep experience of nature, culture, and alpine memory.
