The hike from Upper Valdaora follows the Puster Valley cycle path, a flat and well-marked route crossing meadows and woods. Heading towards the Valdaora dam, the trail continues along the scenic Valdaora lake, with gentle climbs that make the walk varied yet accessible.
The route leads to Monguelfo, a picturesque village known for the Welsperg Castle, one of the oldest in South Tyrol. This itinerary is suitable in every season:
In summer it offers alpine views and lush landscapes.
In winter it becomes a pleasant walk on the snow-covered cycle path, often groomed and suitable for snowshoes or sturdy boots.
The return can easily be made by train, thanks to the Puster Valley railway line connecting Monguelfo to Valdaora and other towns in the valley.
Technical data: length about 7.7 km, duration 2h30–3h, elevation gain +175 m / -137 m, maximum altitude 1,085 m, difficulty easy–medium.
How to get there: From Bolzano take the Brenner motorway (A22) to the Bressanone/Puster Valley exit, then continue on the SS49-E66 state road for about 50 km to Valdaora, starting point of the hike.
