This route connects San Vigilio di Marebbe with the famous Lake Braies, crossing some of the most authentic and peaceful landscapes of the Fanes–Senes–Braies Nature Park. It is an ideal hike for those who enjoy long but accessible routes, with a beautiful alternation of forests, clearings, mountain huts and wide-open views that accompany you step by step toward one of the most photographed places in the Dolomites.
Route Description
The hike starts either in the center of San Vigilio or in the nearby area of Ciamaor, where you follow trail no. 19. The first section climbs gently along a dirt road up to Somamunt, already offering the first glimpses over the valley.
From here, the trail descends toward the Üties de Fojedöra mountain huts, an excellent place for a summer break thanks to the small alpine restaurant surrounded by pastures. The landscape gradually becomes more open and wild, with views expanding toward the peaks of the nature park.
From the hut, the route continues toward Lake Braies, which can be reached in about 6 hours of walking. The arrival at the lake is always striking: emerald waters, the Croda del Becco reflected in the basin, and a timeless atmosphere that makes this place magical in every season.
As a shorter alternative, you can start from Passo Furcia and follow trail no. 3 to Lake Fojedöra, then descend toward Braies. This variant takes about 4.5 hours and is especially appreciated for its open views and varied scenery.
The return to San Vigilio can easily be made by bus, a popular option among hikers who prefer to enjoy the route without having to walk back.
