A must‑do classic in the Dolomites, perfect for anyone who wants to experience high altitude without technical difficulties and enjoy some of the most spectacular views of the entire Sella Group.
Itinerary
From the panoramic terrace of Rifugio Maria on Sass Pordoi (2952 m)—easily reached by cable car from Passo Pordoi—a vast lunar plateau opens up, offering breathtaking views of the Sassolungo and the whole Sella massif. Descending a few metres to the northwest, you reach the panoramic cross, an ideal spot for a first photo break.
From here, follow trail no. 627 to the right, crossing the wide summit plateau until you reach Rifugio Forcella Pordoi (2848 m), located at the junction with the Alta Via no. 2 and at the entrance of the valley that, on the way back, allows you to descend on foot to Passo Pordoi.
Continuing east along the comfortable and popular trail no. 627, you reach Piaz Boè and then turn right onto the red‑and‑white marked path. The final ascent to Piz Boè (3152 m) is varied and enjoyable: rocky steps, short scree sections and a few switchbacks lead quickly to the summit, home to the Capanna Fassa. From here, the panorama is simply extraordinary, with a full 360° view over the Fassa, Gardena and Ampezzo Dolomites.
The descent on the opposite side follows trail no. 638, dropping over scree slopes to the Foresta dei Cacciatori (3110 m). A short ledge equipped with a safety cable (exposed but easy) allows you to overcome a rocky band, after which the path continues comfortably to the characteristic Rifugio Boè (2873 m) on the Sella plateau.
For the return, follow trail no. 627 again, which traverses the western flank of Piz Boè and leads back to Forcella Pordoi and the nearby hut. From here, it takes only a few minutes to climb back to the upper station of the Sass Pordoi cable car.
