Hike to Mount San Cassiano

The hike begins at the Kaseregg parking area (approx. 1,960 m), located above Lazfons in the municipality of Chiusa. It can be reached by car from Velturno or Chiusa via a panoramic mountain road that ends at the parking lot.

From there, follow the gently ascending forest road heading northwest through a sparse forest of larches and red pines until you reach the Klausner Hut (1923 m). Continue along a dirt path to the Rungger huts and the Plankenbach stream, where the Way of the Cross begins—a steady uphill trail marked by 15 devotional stations through dense mountain pine.

The final stretch climbs with several switchbacks to the chapel of the Santa Croce Sanctuary of Lazfons and the adjacent mountain hut (2311 m), the highest pilgrimage site in South Tyrol. From here, take trail no. 9, which winds through rocky terrain and past the small Kassiansee lake, reaching a saddle.

Turn right to ascend the final stretch to the summit of Mount San Cassiano (2581 m), offering breathtaking views of the Sarntal Alps. Return via the same route.
