The hike begins in the hamlet of Sorafurcia at about 1,350 metres. From here, trail no. 3 steadily climbs along forest roads and mountain paths. The ascent requires stamina, taking around 2.5–3 hours, but rewards hikers with the vast plateau of Plan de Corones at 2,275 metres.
Along the way, you pass through coniferous forests and alpine meadows, with ever-wider views opening onto the Puster Valley and the Dolomites. At the summit, a breathtaking 360° panorama stretches from the Sexten Dolomites to the Sassolungo and the border Alps.
Several mountain huts and restaurants invite you to rest and enjoy South Tyrolean cuisine. The peak also hosts two cultural highlights: the MMM Corones, designed by Zaha Hadid for Reinhold Messner, dedicated to mountaineering; and LUMEN – Museum of Mountain Photography, which explores the relationship between humans and the alpine landscape through historic images and multimedia installations.
The descent can follow the same trail or, for a more relaxed option, you can take the cable cars from Valdaora or Riscone back down to the valley.
