Reaching Gartl Lake, nestled in the enchanting hollow known as Laurin’s Little Garden at the foot of the Vajolet Towers, means stepping into the most iconic heart of the Catinaccio. At 2,621 meters, next to the famous Re Alberto Hut, this small alpine lake offers a suspended, almost magical atmosphere, surrounded by towering rock walls that seem sculpted by hand.
From Gardeccia to the Vajolet Huts: entering the Catinaccio
The route begins in Gardeccia, accessible by shuttle, by the Ciampedìe cable car from Vigo di Fassa, or on foot along trail 544 (about 1h30). From here, trail 540 leads deeper into the Catinaccio, gradually revealing its dramatic scenery. In less than an hour you reach the Vajolet Huts, the gateway to the most spectacular section of the hike.
The Gully of the Towers and the climb to Re Alberto Hut
From the Vajolet Huts, the path heads west into the famous Gully of the Towers, a natural corridor that climbs toward the Re Alberto Hut. The ascent is steep and requires sure footing, which is why the route is rated EE – for experienced hikers. After about an hour you reach the hut overlooking the Gartl basin, where the alpine lake mirrors the Vajolet Towers in a breathtaking high‑mountain setting.
