Only a few days remain until the start of the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics. Competitions officially begin on February 4, while the Opening Ceremony is scheduled for February 6 in Milan. The very first event will be the mixed doubles curling match between Sweden and Korea, taking place on the evening of February 4 in Cortina d’Ampezzo.
For the first time in Olympic history, the Opening Ceremony will take place simultaneously in multiple locations: in Cortina d’Ampezzo, it will unfold along the streets of the city center with free public access.
The Olympic Games will conclude on February 22 and involve three Italian regions.
Cortina d’Ampezzo will be the heart of women’s alpine skiing – with Sofia Goggia chasing gold on the iconic Olympia delle Tofane – and will also host curling, bobsleigh, luge and skeleton.
Milan becomes the capital of ice sports: speed skating and ice hockey will take place in Rho, while short track and figure skating will be held at Ice Skating Assago. Ice hockey medals will be awarded at the new Arena Santa Giulia.
In Valtellina, Bormio will host men’s alpine skiing and ski mountaineering, which makes its Olympic debut with the sprint event. Livigno becomes the hub for freestyle skiing and snowboarding, while other venues include Predazzo (ski jumping and Nordic combined), Rasun-Anterselva (biathlon) and Tesero (cross-country skiing and Nordic combined).
A total of 92 nations will take part in the Games. Benin, Guinea-Bissau and the United Arab Emirates will make their Olympic debut, while Kenya, Singapore, South Africa, Uruguay and Venezuela return. There are 2,900 registered athletes, including 196 Italians: 1,538 men and 1,362 women, competing in 16 disciplines for a total of 116 Olympic titles.
The gender gap is due to the fact that Nordic combined remains men-only and the ski jumping team event is reserved for men. With 530 athletes, ice hockey is the most represented discipline, and the arrival of NHL stars makes it one of the most anticipated events for international fans.
