An excursion that crosses some of the most spectacular landscapes of the Catinaccio, moving through high‑altitude meadows, panoramic viewpoints and historic mountain huts. The route begins in the Gardeccia basin, the vibrant heart of hiking in Val di Fassa, and climbs along trail 540 to Ciampedie, a natural terrace overlooking the Vajolet Valley and its famous towers.
From here, the path continues towards Prà Martin, where wide alpine pastures open onto bright, sweeping views, before joining the Troi de le Feide, the evocative “Sheep Trail” running beneath the imposing Cigolade peaks. The landscape becomes wilder and more rugged as you approach the Buja de Vael, a natural gateway to the slopes of Roda de Vael.
Once over the pass, a pleasant descent leads to the Rifugio Roda de Vael, one of the most iconic huts in the Catinaccio Group, perfect for a panoramic break with open views of the Dolomites.
From the hut, two options lead to Passo Costalunga:
- Trail 548, the most direct route, descending gently through meadows and woodland.
- Panoramic variant: follow trail 549 to the monument dedicated to Theodor Christomannos, visionary promoter of the “Dolomite Road”, then continue along trail 539 to Rifugio Paolina. From here, descend to the pass on trail 552 or by chairlift.
A route rich in nature, history, and breathtaking views, ideal for hikers wishing to experience the Catinaccio through a complete and highly scenic trek.
