A fascinating itinerary that crosses some of the most significant sites of the First World War, ideal to hike from May to September. The route is long but accessible, perfect for those who want an excursion immersed in the wild nature of the Lagorai, surrounded by history, sweeping views and the silence of high altitude.
The trail starts at Malga Sorgazza, easily reached from the SS47 Valsugana road by following the signs for Pieve Tesino and then for Val Malene. From here, you follow the military mule track built during the First World War: a wide, steady path that climbs gradually through woods, clearings and historical remains such as trenches, caves and old defensive posts.
Once you reach Forcella Magna, at over 2,100 metres, the view opens onto the ridges of the Lagorai. With a short additional ascent, you can reach the Laghetto di Forcella Magna, a small heart‑shaped alpine lake nestled among rocks and high‑mountain meadows — a scenic and evocative spot for a well‑deserved break.
To tackle the route, waterproof hiking boots are recommended, and if available, a binocular to better admire the landscape and the military structures scattered along the way.
