Trekking on the Pale di Misurina

The loop hike across the Pale di Misurina is a scenic itinerary that blends quiet forests, open ridges and traces of local history. Starting from Lake Misurina, one of the most iconic places in the Cadore area, the trail climbs toward Malga Misurina and then enters the heart of the Pale, offering wide views over the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, the Cadini di Misurina, the Marmarole, Antelao and Sorapiss.

Route description

From Misurina to Malga Misurina 

The trail begins along the shores of Lake Misurina and climbs gently toward Malga Misurina, a natural viewpoint overlooking the Cristallo group.

Along trail 224 

Continue through the forest following trail 224 until a junction, where the route turns right and enters a wide area of mountain pines leading toward the ridge.

Saddle of the Pale di Misurina (2140 m) 

The path reaches a panoramic saddle at 2140 m, a natural balcony with sweeping views of the Tre Cime, the Cadini, the Marmarole, Antelao and Sorapiss.

Descent on the north‑western side

 From the ridge, the trail descends the opposite slope, crossing the north‑western walls of the Pale on a wide and well‑marked path.

Trail 222 and Forcella de Polena (2214 m) 

The descent meets trail 222, coming from Val Popéna Alta. Turning left, the route climbs to Forcella de Polena (2214 m), where the ruins of the old Rifugio Polena still stand.

Return to Misurina 

A path along the rocks on the left leads back toward Misurina, passing the historic border marker no. 17, with the shield of Maria Theresa and the Lion of Saint Mark.
