Passo Giau – Nuvolau

A panoramic route among the most iconic peaks of the Dolomites Starting from Rifugio Passo Giau (2,236 m), follow the Alta Via No. 1 towards the unmistakable profile of the Gusela del Nuvolau. The trail gently winds through alpine meadows and rocky outcrops, immediately offering spectacular views over the Ampezzo Dolomites.

Just before reaching the walls of the Gusela, more experienced hikers can turn right onto trail 443, which climbs steeply towards the Ra Gusela via ferrata. It is a short and easy route, ideal for those who want to reach the summit of Monte Nuvolau (2,575 m) with an extra touch of adrenaline.

Those who prefer an easier itinerary can continue along trail 452, which skirts the slopes of the Gusela while maintaining altitude. The path brushes the scree fields of the massif and leads, with a final steeper section, to Forcella Nuvolau and the nearby Rifugio Averau (2,413 m), one of the most scenic viewpoints in the area.

From the saddle, following trail 439, you can reach the summit of Monte Nuvolau and the historic Rifugio Nuvolau—the oldest in the area (1883)—in about 20 minutes, famous for its spectacular position suspended among the peaks.

For the return, from Forcella Nuvolau you can descend along the comfortable road leading towards Fedare, closing the loop and eventually returning to Passo Giau.
