Presule Castle

Castel Presule (Schloss Prösels) is located in Fiè allo Sciliar, on the Alpe di Siusi in South Tyrol. Built as early as 1200, the castle’s current appearance is the result of Renaissance transformations. Inside, visitors can admire paintings, as well as collections of weapons and armour. At the beginning of June, Castel Presule becomes a festive venue during the Oswald von Wolkenstein equestrian tournament.

Castel Presule is one of the most important historic buildings in Tyrol and dates back to the time of Maximilian I, as indicated by the inscription on the portal; in reality, its construction, commissioned by the Lords of Fiè, can be traced back to around 1200.

In the 1500s, Leonhard von Völs had the castle restored, transforming it into his residence. The Counts of Völs, renowned art patrons and notorious witch hunters, lived in the castle for many centuries.

After the death of the last lord of the manor, Castel Presule was purchased by the Kuratorium Schloss Prösels and, following restoration works, was opened to the public in 1982.

Inside Castel Presule, visitors can admire frescoes depicting hunting scenes in the Knights’ Hall, an exhibition of 19th‑century armour and weapons from around the world, and a collection of modern paintings.

In the inner courtyard stands the precious loggia with pointed arches and several frescoes. The castle’s medieval powder tower is also worth a visit.

Every year, Castel Presule hosts the famous Oswald von Wolkenstein Ride, a medieval tournament that involves all the villages of the Sciliar plateau during the first week of June.

Today, the castle is used for weddings, events, exhibitions, concerts, and literary evenings. Part of the building also houses a restaurant.
