The Castle of Monreale, also known as Castel Königsberg, stands on a hill near San Michele all’Adige, in a strategic position overlooking the Piana Rotaliana and the main routes along the Adige River. This ancient medieval fortress has undergone numerous alterations over the centuries, which have significantly changed its original appearance.
History
Documented since the 13th century, the castle initially belonged to the Appiano family, before passing to the Counts of Tyrol and later to the Habsburgs. The various changes in ownership and the many architectural modifications make it difficult today to precisely reconstruct the manor’s original structure.
The oldest part of the complex is the tower, while the exterior is characterized by a crenellated façade and a distinctive hexagonal tower projecting from the central body. Inside, a large courtyard opens up, surrounded by residential buildings and the chapel, which preserves Renaissance frescoes from the 16th century.
As the property of the Castel Rametz Winery, the castle can only be visited on special occasions, such as FAI Days, Palazzi Aperti, or during dedicated events.
