Lake of Stramentizzo

The Lake Stramentizzo is an artificial reservoir located at the entrance to the Val di Fiemme, just above the village of Molina. Its calm waters, fed by the Avisio stream, now fill the valley where the small settlement of Stramentizzo once stood—a historic village with centuries‑old traditions, mountain farms and a church dedicated to the Guardian Angels.

The construction of the Stramentizzo Dam, begun in the 1950s to produce hydroelectric power, permanently transformed the landscape. On 5 July 1956, after the evacuation of the inhabitants, the old village was submerged by the rising waters of the new reservoir; the following day, the church bell tower—its last visible landmark—was demolished. A new Stramentizzo was later rebuilt higher up, in the locality of Scales, where the displaced community found a new home.

Today, the lake’s gently rippled surface still evokes the memory of what once lay beneath. Along its shores, information panels and local testimonies recount the story of the submerged village, preserving the link between the present landscape and a past that has not been forgotten.
