Lake Santa Croce, the largest lake in the province of Belluno and the second largest in the Veneto region, is a natural lake formed by a landslide that closed the Lapisina Valley, blocking the flow of the Piave River towards Vittorio Veneto and creating the Sella del Fadalto. Located in the Alpago area, between Farra d’Alpago, Puos d’Alpago and Ponte nelle Alpi, this stunning body of water reflects the Alpago mountains and Mount Nevegal in its crystal‑clear waters. The villages along its shores still preserve traditional stepped houses with stone‑slab, straw and reed roofs, typical of the local rural architecture.
Birdwatching at the Sbarai Oasis
Along the lakeshore lies the Sbarai Oasis, an important wetland area shaped by the lake’s changing water levels. This natural reserve is home to many bird species, including the Little Grebe, Lapwing, Reed Warbler, Penduline Tit, Grey Heron and occasionally the White Stork. The oasis is ideal for birdwatching and can be reached via a flat, easy path, where visitors can also admire beautiful white willows.
Baia delle Sirene: the Experimental Fish Hatchery
At the entrance to the Baia delle Sirene, on the southern shore of the lake, stands the Farra d’Alpago Experimental Fish Hatchery, created to support the reproduction of the lake’s most valuable species, such as whitefish, pike and trout, some of which are at risk of extinction. The centre also has an important educational role, offering activities for schools to raise awareness about the lake’s ecosystem. Perfectly integrated into the landscape, the two‑storey building—constructed in wood, concrete and large panoramic windows—offers breathtaking views of Lake Santa Croce and the entire Alpago basin.
Sport and relaxation at Lake Santa Croce
Thanks to its consistently windy climate, Lake Santa Croce is a top destination for windsurfing, kitesurfing and sailing enthusiasts. Throughout the year, especially in summer, colourful sails glide across the lake’s blue waters, attracting athletes from all over Europe.
For lovers of hiking and mountain biking, the area offers several trails, including the northern‑shore path leading to the nature oasis and the 8‑kilometre cycling loop on the eastern shore.
In summer, the lake’s well‑equipped beaches invite visitors to relax, sunbathe or enjoy a picnic. Swimming is permitted, and the area also features beach volleyball courts, football pitches and a playground for children.
Every year, Lake Santa Croce hosts major sporting events, including regattas and windsurfing competitions. In 2017, it was the venue for both the Italian Triathlon Championships and the Windsurfing World Championships.
