In Sappada, in Friuli Venezia Giulia, lies a small and charming body of water nestled in the forest, not far from the course of the Piave River: the Laghetto Ziegelhütte, an artificial lake much loved today for its peaceful atmosphere and for summer sport fishing.
The lake is located at about 1,180 metres above sea level, in an area rich in springs and surrounded by fir and larch trees.
Origin of the name and history of the place
Between the 1950s and 1960s, this area hosted a clay quarry used for the production of bricks for local construction. The name Ziegelhütte comes precisely from this activity and, in the Sappada dialect (of Germanic origin), means “brick factory” or “brick hut.”
The term is a linguistic legacy of the Sappada community, historically linked to Tyrolean and Carinthian culture, which has preserved many German-derived words over the centuries. The name of the lake is therefore a direct reference to its productive past and to the artisanal history of the area.
Today the Laghetto Ziegelhütte is an ideal place for:
- easy walks suitable for everyone
- winter excursions on foot or with snowshoes
- sport fishing during the summer months
- relaxing moments in the forest
- activities for families and children
During the summer opening period, a small service hut is also available, used as a refreshment point and as a reference for anglers.
The path leading to the lake is simple, short and well marked, offering very scenic views of the forest and the traditional hamlets of Sappada.
