Hirtensteig, Shepherd's Path on the Ritten Plateau

A themed trail to discover the life of shepherds and the deep connection between people, animals and the mountains. This is the Hirtensteig, the “Shepherd’s Trail” on the Renon Plateau, a pleasant hiking route near Collalbo, just a few kilometres from Bolzano.

The trail is about 3 km long and winds through meadows, forests and mountain huts, with 5 themed stations dedicated to the traditional work of shepherds. Along the way, visitors can learn more about livestock management, life on alpine pastures and the history of the Rittner Alm, the Renon alpine pasture.

The Hirtensteig is an ideal trail for those who want to enjoy an immersive experience in the nature and culture of South Tyrol, discovering the Renon landscape through its rural traditions.

Autumn on the Renon Plateau: Törggelen and scenic walks

Autumn is one of the best times to visit the Renon Plateau, when the forests turn golden and red and the landscape offers spectacular views of the Dolomites. After hiking the Hirtensteig, you can enjoy local specialities during the traditional Törggelen, including speck, Kaminwurzen, roasted chestnuts and young wine.

The area also offers other interesting experiences, such as the Freud Promenade, dedicated to the famous psychoanalyst who stayed on the Renon Plateau in 1911. From Bolzano, the Renon Plateau is easily accessible in around 12 minutes by the Renon Cable Car, making it perfect for a day immersed in nature, culture and South Tyrolean traditions.
