How to get to South Tyrol

South Tyrol is an easily accessible destination in every season, thanks to its strategic position in the heart of the Alps and a well‑organized network of connections. Whether you travel by car, train, bus or plane, reaching South Tyrol is simple and convenient. The region is served by an efficient public transport system that allows you to reach all valley destinations, from the Dolomites to Val Venosta, from Val Pusteria to the Bolzano area.

How to get there by car

The most direct way to reach South Tyrol is via the A22 Brenner Motorway, which crosses the region from south to north.

From the south

Recommended exits:

Egna/Ora Bolzano Sud (ideal for Merano and the Adige Valley)
Bolzano Nord (for Val d’Ega and Alpe di Siusi) 
Chiusa/Val Gardena Bressanone/Varna (for Val Pusteria, the Three Peaks, Plan de Corones, Alta Badia) 
Vipiteno Brennero

From the west

Access is via the Resia Pass or the Stelvio Pass (open only in summer).

From the east

You can arrive through Val di Landro from Cortina d’Ampezzo or Misurina, or via the Monte Croce di Comelico Pass towards Sesto and the Three Peaks.

How to get there by train

The main railway line is Verona–Trento–Brennero–Munich, with frequent and fast connections.

The main stations are Bolzano, Bressanone, Vipiteno and Brennero.

Two convenient secondary lines are also active:

  • Bolzano – Merano – Val Venosta
  • Fortezza – Brunico – San Candido – Lienz (Austria)

National connections

  • Frecciargento trains from Verona, Florence, Bologna, Rome, Trento and Rovereto
  • Frecciabianca trains from Milan, Turin, Venice, Udine and Trieste (with a change in Verona)

International connections

DB/ÖBB trains connect South Tyrol daily with Austria and Germany.

How to get there by plane

The closest airports are:

  • Innsbruck (INN)

Bolzano Airport

South Tyrol also has Bolzano Airport, offering daily direct flights to Rome Fiumicino and seasonal flights to other destinations.
