Vie Ferrate Val di Fassa: Ferrate of Masarè and Vael

The Masarè and Roda di Vaèl via ferratas form one of the most spectacular routes in the Val di Fassa. This circular itinerary combines iconic Dolomite landscapes, airy passages and unforgettable views of the Catinaccio group, ideal for experienced hikers looking for a full, panoramic day in the mountains.

Starting Point

Rifugio Paolina – 2125 m, reached by chairlift from Passo Costalunga.

From Rifugio Paolina, follow trail no. 539, which climbs across the meadows below Punta del Masarè to the famous Christomannos Monument. Continue right along trail no. 549, reaching the Pederiva and Roda di Vaèl mountain huts (2280 m) in about 1 hour, a beautiful natural terrace overlooking the Vaèl basin.

Masarè Via Ferrata

Following the signs, ascend through scree and boulders to the small saddle south of Punta del Masarè, the starting point of the via ferrata. The cables lead along the eastern side, crossing notches and airy passages that link the eight towers of the ridge—a varied and highly panoramic section.

Across ledges and rocky stretches you reach the Croz di Santa Giuliana, from where a short descent leads into a gully that connects to the southern access of the Roda di Vaèl via ferrata.

Roda di Vaèl Via Ferrata

Climb up the scree slopes to the upper rim of the basin, facing the distinctive Torre della Finestra. Here the second via ferrata begins: an initial descending section—easy but exposed—leads into a lower gully. From there, the route climbs the wide southern ridge, offering impressive views of the famous “red wall” of the Roda di Vaèl.

In about 30 minutes, you reach the summit (2806 m), surrounded by a magnificent Dolomite panorama.

Descent to Passo del Vaiolon and Return

From the summit cross, descend north along an equipped section with wonderful views of the Mugoni and Cigolade peaks, reaching Passo del Vaiolon (2560 m), a narrow notch separating the Vaèl basin from the grassy slopes above Passo Costalunga.

From the pass, descend through scree and boulders along trail no. 551, meeting trails 549 and 552, which lead back to Rifugio Paolina in about 1 hour.
