The Alta Via Bepi Zac is one of the most impressive equipped routes in the Dolomites: a long ridge traverse following the Cime di Costabella, north of Passo San Pellegrino. The itinerary is dedicated to the mountaineer from Val di Fassa, Bepi Pellegrin, known as “Zac”, a historic figure of the valley and former manager of the Rifugio Passo delle Selle. Recently restored, the route leads through military posts, trenches, caves and fortifications from the First World War, surrounded by sweeping views of the Marmolada, Sella, Sassolungo, Catinaccio and Latemar.
Route
From Passo San Pellegrino to Forcella Ciadin – 2,664 m
The hike begins at Passo San Pellegrino, with the option of using the lifts to reduce the ascent. Follow trail 637b, crossing the Campagnaccia pastures before climbing the steep scree slope that leads to Forcella Ciadin. From here, an exposed traverse without protection leads to the start of the route: a large chimney equipped with wooden ladders and cables.
Costabella Ridge: chimneys, ledges and wartime tunnels
The path continues along the jagged Costabella ridge, weaving through chimneys, ledges, crests and tunnels carved into the rock. You pass below the Sasso di Costabella (2,730 m), cross small basins and reach the base of Cima di Costabella (2,759 m), climbed via a short but exposed equipped section along its eastern edge.
Cima Campagnaccia and the Lastei
After several ups and downs, the route reaches Cima della Campagnaccia (2,727 m). Before continuing towards Lastei Grande (2,716 m) and Lastei Picol (2,697 m), it is possible to descend to the valley via a wide saddle on the eastern side. The traverse ends by crossing the rugged Lastei buttresses and reaching the summit of Lastei Picol, just north of Rifugio Passo delle Selle (2,528 m).
Return to Passo San Pellegrino
From the hut, descend along trail 604, passing Rifugio Paradiso (2,170 m). Those who prefer can complete the descent by chairlift.
