The Marino Bianchi Via Ferrata is one of the most panoramic routes in the Cristallo Group, a short yet intense climb set in a high‑mountain environment of exceptional beauty. The itinerary reaches Cima di Mezzo (3154 m), offering breathtaking views over the Ampezzo Dolomites and the Tre Cime di Lavaredo.
Updated approach
Due to the permanent closure of the old Staunies cable car, access to the via ferrata is no longer as immediate as it once was. Today, hikers reach Rifugio Son Forca from Rio Gere by chairlift, then continue on foot along the trail leading to the former Rifugio Lorenzi (2932 m), the starting point of the ferrata.
This change makes the excursion longer and physically more demanding, while the equipped section itself remains unchanged.
The via ferrata
From the plateau near the Lorenzi, the equipment follows the north‑west ridge of the Cristallo. The route is:
- well equipped, with solid cables and iron rungs
- very exposed, especially along the ridge
- short but continuous, with no real resting points
- set in a harsh high‑altitude environment, where the elevation is felt even in midsummer
The climb ends on Cima di Mezzo, a natural balcony overlooking the UNESCO Dolomites.
Descent
The descent follows the same route as the ascent, with careful attention to exposed passages and the possible presence of ice or lingering snow, which can occur even late in the season.
