A spectacular hike that from Passo Xomo leads to the gateway of Monte Pasubio, along one of the most fascinating and meaningful routes of the Great War. The famous Strada delle 52 Gallerie is an extraordinary feat of military engineering: a mule track carved into the rock during World War I to ensure safe supply lines for the troops, protected from enemy fire.
The 366 trail starts from Passo Xomo or Bocchetta Campiglia, where you can leave your car. From here, the ascent begins through a succession of tunnels, curves and passages hewn into the mountain, requiring attention and good familiarity with the alpine environment. A headlamp is essential, as many tunnels are long, dark and feature side branches that can be misleading. The trail surface is generally in good condition, although some sections may be slippery due to water dripping from the rock walls.
After about 2 hours and 30 minutes of hiking and a 750‑metre elevation gain, you reach the Rifugio Generale Achille Papa (1929–1935 m), an extraordinary panoramic viewpoint over the Porte del Pasubio. From here, you can continue towards Cima Palon along the historic tricolour trail, or descend back to the valley via the easier Strada degli Scarubbi, completing an itinerary rich in history, nature and breathtaking scenery.
