High Route of the Mariotta

The Alta Via della Mariotta is one of the most spectacular routes of Passo San Pellegrino, thanks to its wide-open views of the Pale di San Martino, the Marmolada, and the Cima Bocche mountain chain. The trail follows broad panoramic ridges, crosses high‑altitude pastures, and touches areas rich in remains from the First World War.

Start

Upper station of the Col Margherita cable car – 2,513 m
Accessible from Passo San Pellegrino via the cable car (large parking area at the base).

Route

From the top station, follow the trail towards Forcella Vallazza, enjoying spectacular views over the Lagorai.

Continue along the ridge until you reach the base of Cima Juribrutto. Here it is advisable to climb the south‑east ridge (black‑and‑white trail markers):

  • more gradual ascent
  • numerous wartime remains (trenches, posts, stone walls)
  • exceptional views of the Marmolada and the Focobon group

From the summit of Cima Juribrutto (2,697 m), descend to Forcella Juribrutto and continue towards Passo San Pellegrino.
From here you can:

  • complete the loop by returning to the cable car via a panoramic trail, or
  • take the cable car directly back to the upper station (shorter option)

Route features

  • Mixed terrain: ridges, pastures, scree, open sections
  • Trail markings present but not always continuous
  • Some exposed stretches require attention
  • Continuous and spectacular Dolomite scenery

Recommended period

July to September, when the route is completely free of snow.
