Lake Alleghe

Lake Alleghe, located in the upper Cordevole Valley, is a renowned tourist destination in the Agordino area. Set at an altitude of about 966 metres, at the foot of the majestic Mount Civetta, it is an ideal destination for lovers of nature, hiking and water sports.

The lake dates back to 1771. Like many other alpine lakes, it was formed by a massive landslide that detached from a spur of Mount Forca, directly opposite the village of Alleghe. Of this spur, known as Piz, only the lower half remains today, clearly showing the dramatic collapse that created this alpine lake.

The history of Lake Alleghe

On 11 January 1771, a huge landslide fell from Mount Piz, burying the villages of Marin, Riete and Fusine. The enormous natural dam of debris blocked the flow of the stream, causing the water level to rise until it overflowed the ruins and resumed its course. In just three days, the water created the present lake, reaching a depth of 35 metres and a length of half a mile, flooding the villages of Sommariva, Torre, Costa, Peron and Alleghe — the only one partially spared thanks to its higher position.

Today, Lake Alleghe is one of the most distinctive attractions of the area, offering sport fishing, windsurfing, canoeing, sailing, and the chance to rent a boat for a relaxing day on the water.
