The Sorapis Lake is one of the most spectacular natural jewels of the Belluno Dolomites, famous for its intense turquoise color and its dramatic location at the foot of Monte Sorapis. Situated at 1,925 meters above sea level, in the territory of Cortina d'Ampezzo, the lake is accessible only on foot via hiking trails.
The Sorapis Lake is located in a protected area. To preserve its beauty:
- Swimming is not allowed
- Wild camping is prohibited
- Carry out your trash
- Respect flora and fauna
The turquoise color of Sorapis Lake: a natural phenomenon
One of the most striking features of Sorapis Lake is its intense turquoise color, which is breathtaking even from afar. This chromatic effect is due to the presence of ultrafine rock dust from the glacier above, which settles on the lake floor. The suspended particles in the water reflect light in a unique way, producing the blue-green shades that make this lake truly unique.
How to reach Sorapis Lake: 3 main trails
There are three principal routes to reach Sorapis Lake, each offering stunning views but varying in difficulty and duration. Here’s a detailed comparison:
Trail No. 215 from Passo Tre Croci
- Start: Passo Tre Croci (about 1,805 m a.s.l.)
- Elevation gain: about 300 m
- Duration: 2 h (one way)
- Difficulty: moderate-easy hiking
This is the most direct and popular trail. After an initial flat stretch through woodland, hikers face more demanding segments, including metal ladders and exposed sections secured with cables. The views are spectacular, with glimpses of the Cristallo group, Cadini di Misurina, and Tre Cime di Lavaredo. The path ends at Rifugio Vandelli, just above the lake.
Passo Tre Croci – Forcella Marcoira – Rifugio Vandelli – Sorapis Lake
- Start: Passo Tre Croci
- Elevation gain: about 650 m
- Duration: 3.5 h (one way)
- Difficulty: moderate to challenging hiking
A longer and less frequented route. Starting on trail No. 213 to Forcella Marcoira, then descending to Rifugio Vandelli and the lake. This wild and panoramic path is ideal for those seeking solitude and adventure.
Trail 217 – From the former Albergo Cristallo (Val d’Ansiei) to Sorapis Lake
- Start: Near the ex‑Albergo Cristallo in Val d’Ansiei (1,368 m)
- Elevation gain: about 600–688 m
- Duration: approx. 2–3 h one way (≈ 4 h 15 min round trip)
- Difficulty: medium (steep but no technical or exposed sections)
This trail starts from the valley floor near the road to Auronzo. It ascends through forest with a steady incline and occasional rocky steps. It’s steeper than the other trails but doesn’t include ladders or exposed passages—suitable even for those sensitive to heights. It ends at Rifugio Vandelli, from which the lake is just minutes away.
Best time to visit Sorapis Lake
The ideal period is from late June to September, when trails are snow-free and the lake’s color is at its peak. In peak season (July–August), start early to avoid crowds, especially on Trail 215.
In autumn, the scenery is enhanced by warm colors and fewer visitors, though water levels may be lower.
In winter, access is not recommended. Trails are snow- and ice-covered, becoming risky even for experienced hikers. Exposed or cable-secured segments can be particularly treacherous. Only attempt with proper alpine winter gear (crampons, snowshoes, ARTVA).
Rifugio Vandelli: accommodation and refreshment point
Located just minutes from the lake, Rifugio Vandelli (1,926 m) is a must-visit. It offers traditional dishes, hot drinks, and even beds for overnight stays. It's perched in a natural amphitheater overlooking the lake, the “Dito di Dio,” and surrounding peaks.
Advance reservation is recommended, especially in summer.
