Lake Braies: immersed in nature, just a step from the sky

Lake Braies, in the Val di Braies, is one of the most famous destinations in the Dolomites. Its turquoise waters, the Croda del Becco in the background and the Dolomite landscape make it an ideal destination for an outing, a walk or a hike.

In 2027 the traffic regulations will again be in force during the summer months.

How to get to Lake Braies

By car

Lake Braies is reached by driving along the Val di Braies road.

During the summer period of regulation, it is important to check in advance the access conditions to the valley and any booking procedures.

On days of heavy visitor numbers, it is advisable to plan your trip in advance, especially if you wish to arrive by car.

By bus

Lake Braies can be reached by line 442, which connects the area of Dobbiaco and Villabassa with the lake.

Depending on the season, shuttle services may also be available.

Timetables, connections and access methods may change: before departure, it is therefore advisable to check the updated service.

On foot or by bicycle

Lake Braies can also be reached via routes starting from the Val di Braies and from the villages in the area.

It is an interesting option for those who want to combine the visit with a hike and experience the Dolomite landscape at a slower pace.

Where to park at Lake Braies

The car parks closest to the lake are:

  • P3, about 300 metres away;
  • P4, about 100 metres away;
  • P2, about 800 metres away.

Parking spaces are limited and on days of heavy visitor numbers they may sell out quickly.

If you are travelling in peak season, check the official information in advance regarding availability, prices, booking and access methods.

To avoid surprises, it is always advisable to check the current situation before setting off.

How much time is needed to visit Lake Braies?

For a relaxed visit to Lake Braies, allow at least 2-3 hours.

You can walk along the shores, admire the view, stop to take photographs and, when the service is operating, hire a boat.

If you also want to go on a hike in the area, you can plan a half day or include the lake in a wider itinerary across the Dolomites.

The walk around Lake Braies

The walk along the shores allows you to see the lake from different perspectives and to admire the surrounding Dolomite landscape.

The route has different features along the two sides and some sections with slopes and steps. Shoes suitable even for a simple walk are therefore recommended.

Lake Braies is also a destination suitable for families, but those travelling with pushchairs or people with reduced mobility should check in advance which section of the route best suits their needs.

When to visit Lake Braies

Lake Braies can be visited in all seasons, but the experience changes depending on the time of year.

Summer is the most suitable time for hikes and outdoor activities, but it is also the period of greatest visitor numbers. You must also consider the regulation of access to the Val di Braies.

Spring and autumn are ideal for those seeking a calmer atmosphere. In spring, however, it is important to check the condition of the trails, which may still be affected by snow.

Winter offers a completely different landscape, often characterised by snow and ice. Before setting off, it is advisable to check the condition of the road and the routes.

If you want to avoid the busiest times, the early morning hours are generally the best time to visit the lake.

Lake Braies is the starting point of the Alta Via 1

Lake Braies is the traditional starting point of the Alta Via 1 of the Dolomites, one of the best-known treks in the Dolomites.

The itinerary crosses some of the most spectacular landscapes of the Dolomite mountains and continues towards the province of Belluno, as far as the Schiara Group.

The Alta Via 1 is a multi-day trek: those who want to complete it must therefore organise in advance the stages, overnight stays in the refuges, bookings and transport to reach the starting point.

It is also important to check weather and trail conditions before setting off.

Lake Braies and “Un passo dal cielo”

The fame of Lake Braies and the Val di Braies is also linked to television.

The landscapes of the area have been associated with the popular television series “Un passo dal cielo”, originally starring Terence Hill and broadcast by Rai from 2011.

The series helped introduce the South Tyrolean Dolomites to a wide audience. However, filming took place at several locations in the area and not exclusively at Lake Braies.

The legend of Lake Braies

Lake Braies is linked to a fascinating popular legend.

It is said that, in a distant time, the mountains of the area were inhabited by a people of savages, guardians of great riches, including gold and precious stones.

When some shepherds arrived in the valley, an exchange of goods began between the two peoples. Over time, however, the shepherds became increasingly interested in the savages’ riches, until they took possession of them.

To protect their treasures, according to the legend, the savages opened the underground springs, causing a great quantity of water to gush forth.

The waters formed the lake and swallowed the riches, separating the shepherds’ valley from the savages’ mountains.

This is said to be the origin of the name Wildsee, meaning “Wild Lake”, from which the German name Pragser Wildsee derives.

The legend is part of the narrative heritage of the Val di Braies and adds to the charm of this place.
