The Lake Tovel is one of the most charming and scenic places in Trentino, located in the heart of the Val di Non and inside the Adamello Brenta Natural Park. This alpine lake is famous not only for its natural beauty but also for the unique history connected to the natural phenomenon that once dyed its waters bright red, earning it the nickname "Red Lake".
What to see and do at Lake Tovel
The lake, surrounded by majestic mountains such as Monte Roen, offers breathtaking views attracting hikers, nature lovers, and photographers from all over the world. Numerous well-marked trails allow visitors to explore the area, suitable for both families and experienced hikers. Among them, the path around the lake is ideal for a relaxing walk, while those seeking more challenge can climb the surrounding peaks.
In summer, Lake Tovel is a paradise for those who love trekking and birdwatching, thanks to its rich biodiversity and pristine landscapes. During autumn, the foliage creates a warm and intense color palette, perfect for walks and photography.
History and curiosities
For years, Lake Tovel was known for its natural phenomenon: the red coloring of its waters, caused by a specific alga called Tovellia sanguinea. This event, no longer visible today, was the subject of scientific studies and helped make the lake famous internationally.
How to get there and where to stay
From Tuenno, follow the signs and take the SP14 along the Val di Tovel which ends at the car park near the lake. From June to September, charges are applied to the car park. The purchase of the parking ticket must be made directly at the ticket office in Tuenno, in via Trento 109, before heading towards the Val di Tovel. During summer a shuttle bus runs between the car park and the lake. On foot, we recommend the remarkable “Sentiero delle Glare” footpath. From Capriolo restaurant, cross the lunar landscape of the enormous boulder field created by the collapse of Monte Corno and climb up through the forest to the lake.
Nearby, you will find many accommodation options such as hotels, B&Bs, and lodgings, perfect for a holiday immersed in nature and relaxation.
