San Romedio is one of the most venerated hermits of Trentino, connected to the sanctuary bearing his name in Val di Non. His figure is wrapped in history, devotion and legend, especially because of the famous episode of the bear which, according to tradition, became his traveling companion.
Who was San Romedio?
According to tradition, Romedio belonged to a wealthy noble family from the area of Thaur, near Innsbruck. During a pilgrimage to Rome, he would have chosen to change his life, giving up his possessions to dedicate himself to prayer and penance.
Romedio then retired to Val di Non, in an isolated place immersed in nature, where he lived as a hermit. It is here that tradition places his cave, in the place where the Sanctuary of San Romedio now stands.
The dating of his life is not certain, however: the news handed down belongs for the most part to religious tradition, while historical documentation relating to the cult of San Romedio is attested at least from the 11th century.
San Romedio and hermitism
Romedio's choice to abandon wealth and social life to retire into nature echoes the tradition of Christian hermitism.
The place he chose for his retreat is particularly evocative: a rocky outcrop in Val di Non, surrounded by forest and carved by a narrow gorge. Over the centuries, around the memory of the hermit, one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Trentino was born.
The first nucleus of the sanctuary arose around the tomb attributed to Romedio; the complex was then enlarged in different periods to include five churches connected by a staircase of 131 steps.
The legend of San Romedio's bear
The most famous legend tells that, now elderly, Romedio had to go to Trento. When he prepared to leave, he discovered that his horse had been torn apart by a bear.
Instead of fleeing or killing the animal, Romedio would have tamed it and ordered it to replace the horse.
From then on the bear became the most well-known symbol of San Romedio and is still represented next to the saint in images and works of art in the sanctuary today. The legend is an integral part of the identity of the place and its popular tradition.
San Romedio between history and legend
The figure of San Romedio thus arises from the intertwining of religious tradition, historical memory and popular stories. It is difficult to reconstruct a certain biography of the hermit, but the devotion towards him has crossed the centuries and has left concrete testimony in the sanctuary of Val di Non.
Today San Romedio is known especially for his sanctuary, for the legend of the bear and for the evocative natural environment in which the place of worship is set.
