Alpine Tour to Mount Geige

The solitary and majestic Mount Geige, rising above Montassilone, is a hidden gem for hikers seeking peace, authentic nature, and unforgettable panoramas. From its summit, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of Brunico, Valle Aurina, and the surrounding alpine peaks.

The hike begins in Montassilone, at the large panoramic board located above Hotel Miraval. Follow the sign toward Malga Montassilone, then turn onto trail no. 7A, which climbs steeply through forested slopes and ancient spruces, offering scenic glimpses of the valley.

The trail is well-marked and peaceful, though demanding. After about 1.5 hours, you reach the summit cross of Mount Geige, where a 360° panorama opens up: the peaks of Valle Aurina, the valley floor of Brunico, and the Dolomites in the distance.

From the summit, continue along the ridge, descending into a small hollow. Here, take trail no. 8 down into the Valle di Riva, passing through meadows and woods. At the valley floor, turn left along trail no. 2, following the valley entrance.

At the next junction, turn right onto the access road to Rio Molino, continuing to a hairpin bend. Shortly after, take the left-hand trail, which connects to trail no. 4, leading gently back to the starting point.

How to Reach Montassilone: Montassilone is accessible only by car. Alternatively, take bus 450 to Gais (Paese stop) and hike up to Montassilone (approx. 1 hour walk).
