The hike to Monte Bel Colle from Montassilone is a medium-difficulty tour that offers wide views of the Rieserferner Group, the Brunico basin, and the Dolomites.
The starting point is the parking area near the church of Montassilone, from where trail no. 3 leads towards Oberwielenbach. After a stretch through the forest you reach a junction and continue on trail no. 7B, which leads to the clearing of the Hühnerspiel, a treeless hill opening up views of the surrounding peaks. From here, trail no. 7 continues to the summit of Monte Bel Colle (2,450 m).
The descent follows the same trail, passing by the Montassilone Alm, where you can stop for a break. The hike takes about five to six hours, with an elevation gain of around one thousand meters. Montassilone can be reached only by car, or alternatively by bus 450 to Gais, from where it is about an hour’s walk uphill.
