The cultural tourism landscape in South Tyrol is gearing up for an exceptional event with the return of Schlern Music 2026. This biennial festival transforms Völs am Schlern into a widespread international stage. Under the artistic direction of flutist Chiara Tonelli and cellist Philipp von Steinaecker, the May edition offers a sensory journey where the historic and rural architecture of the Dolomites becomes an essential part of the performance. Moving away from conventional concert halls, the festival inhabits atmospheric venues, starting on May 13th at the evocative Edelansitz Zimmerlehen and continuing at the authentic Stanglerhof.
The core identity of Schlern Music lies in its bold programming, which explores rare chamber music repertoire. This year features a special focus on the solo oboe, with works by Benjamin Britten, Mozart, and Moscheles, alongside masterpieces like Brahms' String Sextets and modern compositions by Penderecki and Veress. The search for the unusual extends to the venues: for the first time, music will fill unconventional spaces such as the former barn of Hotel Gfell / Schönblick and the industrial setting of the Koholz joinery in St. Anton, proving how art can elevate every natural and productive corner of the region.
The prestige of the event is ensured by a world-class ensemble of performers, ranging from legends like Veronika Hagen and Volker Jacobsen to principal players from elite European orchestras, including Andrea Obiso (Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia), Martin Zalodek (Vienna Philharmonic), and oboist Olivier Doise. Beyond the main concerts, the festival promotes cultural outreach: Hotel Heubad will host moderated artist talks, while the Völs Library will welcome children (ages 8-12) for a dedicated educational event.
The week reaches its climax on May 17th with the closing concert at the historic Prösels Castle. Within the medieval walls, the rare Quintet for Piano Left-Hand by Franz Schmidt will be performed by the pianist and surgeon Sebastian Debus, sealing an edition of extraordinary artistic depth.
