St. Lawrence's Night: why is it celebrated on August 10?
August 10 is the day on which the Christian calendar commemorates Saint Lawrence, a 3rd-century martyr. According to tradition, the saint was sentenced to death and burned on a gridiron.
Over time, popular legend has linked shooting stars to the sparks and glowing embers of Saint Lawrence's martyrdom. This is how the ancient tradition of calling the meteors streaking across the night sky the "Tears of Saint Lawrence" came about, turning the night of August 10 into a symbolic moment for making wishes while gazing up at the stars.
From an astronomical point of view, the shooting stars visible during this period are mainly associated with the Perseid meteor shower, one of the best-known and most spectacular astronomical events of summer. The shower remains active for several weeks and usually reaches its peak around mid-August. This means that the nights following August 10 can also be particularly good for watching meteors.

The festivities begin at 9:15 pm with a procession led by the Musega de Poza. The procession starts at Hotel Europa and crosses the village before reaching the parish church, where the final concert will take place.
The evening continues with live music, dancing under the stars and entertainment for all ages. It is a wonderful opportunity to experience St. Lawrence's Night surrounded by tradition, music and a summer atmosphere, with your eyes turned towards the sky.
Terrazza delle Stelle on Monte Bondone, Trento
For those looking for an experience dedicated to astronomy and stargazing, the Terrazza delle Stelle on Monte Bondone, near Trento, is the place to be.
On August 10, 11 and 12, 2026, from 9 pm to midnight, visitors will be able to observe the night sky and discover the stars and the wonders of the universe.

Astrocene at the Col Drusciè Observatory in Cortina d'Ampezzo
In Cortina d'Ampezzo, in the heart of the Belluno Dolomites, the Col Drusciè Astronomical Observatory offers the Astrocene experience, combining mountain cuisine with stargazing.
The events are scheduled for August 7, 12, 14, 19 and 21, 2026, and include a dinner at Rifugio Col Drusciè, followed by a guided tour of the astronomical observatory and telescope observation.

St. Lawrence's Night at Knottnkino in Verano
Another event dedicated to the starry sky will take place at Knottnkino in Verano, South Tyrol, on August 11, 2026, from 7:30 pm to 11 pm.
The evening includes stargazing with members of the Max Valier amateur astronomers' association, accompanied by music and snacks.
Although the event takes place on the evening after August 10, it is an interesting opportunity to extend the St. Lawrence's Night experience and continue observing the summer sky in search of the Perseids.
Planetarium South Tyrol in Val d'Ega
Another place worth considering for anyone interested in stargazing is the Planetarium South Tyrol, located in San Valentino in Campo, in Val d'Ega. Throughout the year, the planetarium hosts events and screenings dedicated to astronomy and, in the past, has organised special evenings dedicated to shooting stars and the Perseids around St. Lawrence's Night.
