On the summit of Cima Fertazza, in the heart of the Dolomites,in a breathtaking location offering a 360-degree view of Pelmo, Civetta, Lake Alleghe, the Sella Group, Marmolada, Val Fiorentina and the Ampezzo Dolomites, the new work by artist Marco Martalar has been unveiled: the "Cervo del Fertazza" (Fertazza Deer).
The sculpture, standing 7 meters tall, was created using the wood of trees felled by the Vaia storm in 2018. It stands as a powerful symbol of rebirth, strength, and deep respect for nature. The Cervo del Fertazza is easily accessible by the two Fertazza lifts from Pescul, or on foot along a marked trail starting from the chairlift parking area.
More than just a work of art, the deer embodies resilience and hope. The Vaia storm, which struck in late October 2018, left deep scars across many alpine forests. Today, part of that shattered wood lives again in a new form, turning destruction into inspiration.
Yesterday, many visitors, locals and enthusiasts gathered at the summit for the moving inauguration ceremony. Amid emotion and silence, the profound symbolic value of the work was highlighted. The deer now stands tall, silently watching over the valley between the Civetta and Pelmo peaks. Proud and still, it invites every visitor, young and old, to pause, observe, and listen — because beauty can also arise from wounds.
These were the words of the artist, who shared the origin of the idea: “One evening a few years ago, Michela Torre, owner of the Ristoro Belvedere, called me. We didn’t know each other, but her words were clear: ‘A place this beautiful needs one of your works.’ She told me of her wish to host a large animal sculpture among the mountains, made from the fallen wood of the Vaia storm. I thought it over and suggested a deer — majestic, strong, and kind.”
Thus, the Cervo del Fertazza was born — rising now against the sky as a silent guardian of the land and its memory. It’s a heartfelt invitation to all who love the mountains, nature, and art to reach the summit and be inspired.
